A couple of years ago, when the radio station I used to listen to in the car started playing Christmas music 24 x 7, before Thanksgiving, I said, “Not only no, hell no!” and voted with the scan button on the radio.
I ended up on WNED-FM (Buffalo) which is classical music — and an NPR station to boot — and I never looked back.
This renewed a faint interest I always had in classical music in general and it’s been an interesting ride. I’ve purchased “How to Listen to and Understand Great Music” which gave me some of the vocabulary I needed to understand what I was listening to. So when someone refers to the ‘rondo movement’ of a concerto, I know it’s usually the last and more lively movement of the piece. I can’t pick it out myself but I know enough to enjoy what I’m listening to.
So today is Beethoven’s birthday. There are several classical (in more than one sense of the word) pieces scheduled to be played on the radio today and I’m going to try to tune in.
Not quite so classical but, well, just as much fun, is a clip I’ve found to share with you:
Have a great weekend!
