Due to a malfunction, the Batavia campus of the college has lost power.
While there is power in some parts of the building currently (about noon), that may or may not last through the afternoon.
All Batavia campus classes are cancelled for Wednesday — both day and evening classes.
Employees should contact their supervisor; only essential personnel are to report. Campus center staff should contact their dean.
A message has been posted on Genesis (https://genesee.open.suny.edu) — that message will be removed when the power outage problems have been resolved. While Blackboard access should be stable, students who have “one time only” tests should not access the test until this is resolved.
This outage may last into the late afternoon. Updates will be made as they become available.
One of the new ‘features’ that will be available in Office 2016 — although it says only when you have an Office 365 subscription — is Word Researcher.
This tool uses Bing to go out and help you find information on a paper you are writing.
The cool part is that it allows you to add citations to your text. There isn’t overt information on the page, so I’m not sure if it allows for APA / MLA / etc style… I guess I should watch the video.
The good new/bad news is that you only have to highlight text from a web page and it will add it to the document… not that it wasn’t already easy enough to copy/paste from a web site already!
It purports: Researcher uses Bing to pull in the appropriate content from the web and provide structured, safe and credible information. YMMV
Going to be worth your while to check it out!
Click this link for more information and how to access Researcher.
Well, I was really never gone… just didn’t post a lot! Or at all for the last year.
For 2017, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to post something weekly… there’s things to say or announce or just marvel at… so I’m going to remember to share.
If you have topics you want me to talk about, do leave me a note! I’d love to write something you’d like to read.
Otherwise, I’m just going to talk about things I think you maybe should know more about. Whether you knew you were interested in that topic or not!
I’m looking forward to starting up again!
The summer construction project is complete! GCC’s dining service partner, American Dining Creations, welcomes back students with a new kitchen and cafe!

The bookstore will be closed from June 8th-12th for renovations. The staff will still be able to process online orders and answer emails.
The renovations will include a new ceiling, additional textbook shelving, an upgraded technology center, window murals, and other minor enhancements. They will reopen the week of June 15th. There will be some minor construction going on that week so access to certain areas may be limited. The bookstore will reopen at full capacity on June 22nd.
If you have questions for the bookstore you can call x6878 or email any of the staff.
On Tuesday, December 2, American Food and Vending opened the Subway franchise in the student union. Subway will be open each week as follows:
- Monday – Thursday 10:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
- Friday 10:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- Saturday noon- 6:00 p.m.
- Sunday noon- 3:00 p.m.
The Subway franchise carries a full line of Subway products (except for breakfast items). All promotions that you see advertised nationally are honored here at Genesee. Subway points, on Subway cards, can be accumulated and redeemed here at Genesee.
Students who have purchased a meal plan can use Subway as an option for their meal plan. A Subway meal includes a six inch sub, drink, and chips or two cookies. Subs that are eligible for the meal plan are those shown on the first two screens of the menu panels behind the serving line.
Just because it’s a holiday, doesn’t mean there isn’t work to do! ::grin::
If you’re relatively new or simply don’t remember, Computer Services routinely uses the Monday holiday in each semester to do major system maintenance. The advantage is that for our vendors, it’s a normal work day, and for us, well, you-all aren’t here!
What makes this important is that ALL SYSTEMS will be OFFLINE AND UNAVAILABLE between 6 AM and 4 PM on Monday, October 13.
This includes and is not limited to:
- College web site
- Genesis / Blackboard
- Employee Email (mail will not be lost; it will be held until delivery is possible later in the day)
- Student Email (well, not offline, but they won’t be able to get to it)
- Access to Banner Self Service
FACULTY: If you have work due in any course on October 13, please take this into account. Students will not be able to submit work until later in the day.
I am very aware that many working students like to take advantage of the day off from classes to catch up on assignments. Your instructor can help by providing a list of “things you can do for 10 hours while Blackboard is offline.” There are reading assignments, research papers, videos and other work that can probably be completed without Blackboard. We’re not shutting down the entire Internet (although don’t you wish we could every once in a while?), just our little corner of it.
Questions? You know where I live!
